Lunch

I have a hard time with lunch. Specifically, packing it.

The problem is that it's difficult to have something delicious that is also easy to transport and doesn't require any additional steps for cooking/preparing. I've been having salads and sandwiches for over two years now and I'm just sort of stuck as to how to vary my routine. Not to mention that salads are sort of time consuming to prepare and difficult to pack especially on bike days.

So, friends, what do you do?

I've been monitoring a number of bento blogs, bento being the japanese style of making lunch boxes. Their cooking methods look interesting as they are delicious and homemade but are designed to be eaten at room temperature. I haven't had the time or courage to try making one yet, but it's an option I'm seriously considering.

So if you have any lunch-time tips or favorite things, share them in the comments! I'd be much obliged.

The onigiri I linked to in my steak post is a bento classic, so I've been told. There are no extra steps after prep except to wrap them in nori right before eating so to keep it from going limp. The prep was a little involved, but I bet it's one of those things that would go really fast once you develop a method.

I got a bento(ish) box for Christmas 2006, and I love it! I pack crackers and cheese, apples and nutella, bagels, noodles of many sorts, hard-boiled eggs, cold baked potatoes (very addictive), and so on. I usually stay away from meat products because of their need for heating, though chicken or tuna salad is often my friend. I'll be excited to try the onigiri, cold soba noodles, hummus, cubes of paneer with some sort of dipping sauce and pita, etc.

If you are not opposed to some repetition, I find when the weather is cooler that lunch becomes very easy if I just make a big pot of soup, stew, or chili that I can eat of for the rest of the week. Throw in a salad an you have the semblance or a reasonable meal that takes little thought.
